UVA RESEARCH

The University of Virginia is a significant research enterprise in the state, exceeding $338 million in research expenditures in the fiscal year 2017. UVA research faculty and staff make remarkable discoveries every day. Our role at LVG is to engage early and often with all research activity across Grounds and find market applications that transform ideas into innovations with impact.

Patent Agreement

Engagement Request Form

LVG replaced the Invention Disclosure form in 2017 and introduced the Engagement Request Form in its place to lower the threshold for UVA faculty members to engage with our office and disclose their research discoveries. The form, now available online, can be submitted via the LVG website or downloaded as a PDF. 

Completing this form will initiate a conversation with LVG about the commercial potential of faculty research and the protection resources available. We encourage UVA innovators to engage with LVG early and often during research activities allowing us to help identify pathways to move innovations forward.

The UVA Licensing & Ventures Group is responsible for managing the University’s intellectual property portfolio. The LVG team includes those who hold Ph.D.’s, J.D.’s, and M.B.A.’s to offer UVA faculty researchers resources at the intersection of science and industry.

UVA Resources + Network

LVG works within the UVA entrepreneurial and research ecosystems to maximize opportunities for UVA developed technologies. Our licensing team has established relationships with third party industry partners who assess UVA developed technologies, and share feedback to help drive further development of inventions. LVG shares this information openly with faculty to ensure their invention addresses a real market need.

LVG also has long standing partnerships with UVA Proof of Concept funding programs including the Coulter Translational Partnership, the Ivy Foundation, and LaunchPad for Diabetes to connect faculty with applicable funding resources to advance translational research.

License Agreements

LVG facilitates license agreements with third party industry partners and works with UVA faculty to find the right licensee for each invention. Once an understanding of needs from each party is determined, LVG models potential deals and negotiates an agreement. The result is a license, which can be preceded by an option that leads to a license, and includes financial parameters and commercialization requirements.

UVA LVG Seed Fund

The UVA LVG Seed Fund supports new ventures emerging from the university portfolio. The objectives of the Fund are to support the UVA Cornerstone Plan, be capable of generating significant financial returns and be diversified in supporting a broad range of innovation assets developed at UVA. The Fund will reinvest its gains to provide capital for additional investments.
